We rejoice this week on the news of the canonisation of our Carmelite brother, Saint Titus Brandsma.
He was arrested after writing and preaching against the Nazi persecution of the Jews and encouraging the Dutch Catholic press to resist publishing Nazi propaganda. After being detained for two months in Scheveningen prison and a further two months in Amersfoort transit camp , he was offered freedom if he would stop speaking out against the Nazi regime. He refused, knowing that he would be sent to the notoriously brutal concentration camp in Dachau. There he was murdered by lethal injection on 26 July 1942.
We ask his prayers for peace in our world, for journalists who risk their lives to report the truth and for all who oppose injustice.
Saint Titus Brandsma: Pray for us
