On Monday 20th July we can reflect in more depth on the Old Testament figure of Elijah, a man who challenged the idolatry and the priorities of the age in which he lived. He is revered as the 'Father of all Carmelites' today, ready to listen in solitude to the gentle voice of God and courageous in his call to 'turn' (Hebrew: 'teshuvah') from injustice and from oppression. His focus is always on fair treatment of others, on peace and the integrity of Creation.
