'Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own' (The Sermon on the Mount)
On the mountainside you witness familiar faces from the neighbourhood veering in and out of the crowd to hear the reflections of Jesus. There are many too from surrounding regions who have been drawn to listen to this 'teacher' or 'prophet'. Someone close by remarks that '.. the world is one big source of worry'. Another says '.. it's all very well him saying that!'
Jesus has sketched out a slice of life which sounds fairly accurate. He has highlighted division and conflict that can arise between colleagues, between friends and family. Promises and vows that are made publicly but never kept. Wealth accumulated without thought for where 'real treasure' might lie. These are the behaviours and attitudes that can truly contribute to tiredness and cynicism.
He speaks directly to you as one of the crowd with clarity and authority. You sense his deep insight and wisdom. He has outlined a new vision to the people gathered, a just and compassionate way ahead, one where you too can play a part.
Yes, the worry of each day is enough to carry! His words seem to affirm a more balanced and sensible approach. The soul can rest and re-focus, knowing an obedience and a deeper trust in God.
Consider nature implies Jesus - 'the lilies and the birds'. How we easily overlook the environment around us! You shall wait and listen to the next segment of his teaching.
You are now calm amidst the crowd. The mountainside seems the 'right place' to be just now.
